2. Background
The Rural Development Initiative (RDI) is a youth and agriculture development NGO dedicated to transforming rural livelihoods across Rwanda, aligned with Rwanda’s Vision 2050 and NST2. Rooted in the belief that every farmer and youth possesses the innate capacity to thrive, RDI equips vulnerable households, women, and smallholder farmers with strategic skills, resources, and entrepreneurial support to drive innovation, climate-smart farming, and dignified livelihoods. Driven by its mission to empower youth and smallholder farmers as active citizens creating sustainable incomes, RDI works toward its Vision 2030 of becoming Rwanda’s premier social enterprise model recognized nationally and regionally for transforming rural communities into resilient, agri-preneurial economies.
Under the “Action for Kungahara / PROFARM” project implemented in partnership with EUCORD and supported by the European Union, RDI is strengthening nutrition security and resilient food systems across farmers’ cooperatives gathering smallholder members (60% women and 20% youth) and indirect household beneficiaries in Burera and Gicumbi Districts. To directly address high chronic malnutrition and stunting rates in these targeted Northern Province regions which reach up to 41% in both Burera and Gicumbi.
